I truly believe in working on the root cause of substance use more than the discipline of stopping all substances. In fact staying disciplined typically reaches its breaking point. Humanity doesn't typically do the best at consistent disciplined behaviors long-term. I think as we address the root finding your sobriety gets easier. Not to dismiss the real reality of physical addiction. Root causes can be fear of failure, rejection, fear of abandonment, caregiving, people pleasing, low self-esteem, grief and loss, perfectionism, pressure, abuse/trauma, fear of future etc. What is your root? I definitely have grief and fear of abandonment. I also have a lot of pressures. Thus, learning to rest n recover and feel my grief...ask for help and receive help has been really helpful vs...just trying to be disciplined.
